The only dedicated science experience in NSW

We are a place where anyone, young and old, can come and experience how science and technology discoveries have become reality.

Science Space is founded upon the principles of education, hands-on learning and accessibility.

We exist to advocate the value of science and technology and increase general science literacy. We house over 90 interactive exhibits, Science Shows, Workshops and NSW’s most digitally advanced Planetarium, the DIGISTAR 6.

In 2019, we launched the very first indoor starlight cinema experience in the Illawarra, SciFri Cinema. Be sure to check out our What to see and do section for upcoming events.

Located just 1 hour south of Sydney CBD, Wollongong is a coastal city famous for its stunning stretch of beaches, the Grand Pacific Drive, food and nightlife. A trip to Wollongong can be as adventurous or relaxing as you like.

History

Science Space was first introduced under the name of ‘Science Centre and Planetarium’, the doors first opened in 1989. We have grown to become the #1 indoor attraction in the Illawarra.

Previously located in the old migrant building, the Centre originated with Glen Moore and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. The Centre became a popular local attraction, with exhibits from Expo 88 and Questacon.

The 1998 Wollongong floods caused devastating effects throughout the area. These floods significantly damaged the gallery, exhibits and equipment.

In 2000 Science Space was rebuilt, together with support from the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the NSW Government, the doors were reopened to the public.

Science Space was the first building to be built on the Innovation Campus site, which now has 9 buildings on the coastal site, making up the University of Wollongong’s award-winning research and commercial precinct.
